The Origin Of The Numa Numa Dance

The Numa Numa dance was an Internet craze that began when Gary William Brolsma set up a web cast of himself miming to Moldovan pop band O-zone's song'Dragostea Din Tei'. Millions of Internet viewers across the globe logged on to watch this propelling Brolsma to international notoriety.

The dance originated when Brolsma, from Saddlebrook, New Jersey, armed with a webcam and a recording of the track decided to film himself dancing in his room and mouthing the words to a sing-a-long style. On the video his face appears very close to the camera and he wears a black t-shirt and mimics a singer waving his arms in the air and appearing to have a very good time.

His video is very entertaining due to the frantic arm movements and gestures which he used frequently. His entertaining facial expressions also make the video a highly amusing hit.

Within the song there are lyrics that say Numa Numa and so the media immediately pounced on this term and coined him the Numa Numa guy which is easier to use than the original title of the song.

The media exposure caused Brolsma to retreat at first, but then he took advantage of his fifteen minutes of fame and went on to have a band and record a video of the song making several different versions of it.

Since his exposure on the Numa Numa dance he has made appearances on many prominent television shows and has gone on to have a very successful career. This is testament to the power that a webcam can have to launch anyone out there that can offer something and draw it into popular culture.

Brolsma's reimagining of the song has given him the kind of exposure that he probably never dreamt about. The Numa Numa dance is now a term that lends itself to anyone gyrating at home with a webcam and broadcasting this out through an online medium.
